THE CHURCH YOU CAN READ ABOUT IN THE BIBLE

Brief History:

Jesus spoke these words many, many years ago. He spoke to only a small group of men, but these words would effect men until the end of time.

What were these words? "I will build my church!" (Matthew 16:18)

As far as the Bible tells us, this was the first time Jesus ever used the word, "church."  But God has planned the church before He made the world.

(Ephesians 1:4-5) The part of the Bible called the "Old Testament" is the story of God making the world ready for His church.

                  THE CHURCH ESTABLISHED

Less than a year after Jesus promised to build His church , he was killed, and buried. But three days later, Jesus rose from the dead. He overcame death.

Fifty days later, on the Pentecost, the Apostles received  the Holy Spirit. Peter, being inspired, convinced the multitude of Jews assembled at Jerusalem for the annual feast that they were responsible for the death of Jesus. When they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? (unlike most false religion today they didn't ask what they shall "feel" or "experience") but what they MUST DO!! Peter responded by saying to them, " repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received His word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls (Acts 2:37, 38, 41). The church had  begun.

                                                            WHAT THE CHURCH IS

This church was not a building. The church was people. It was made up of all people who had been born  again, of the water and the Spirit (John 3:5). They were people who had been bought from sin by the blood of Jesus and added by the Lord to His church (Acts 2:47).

The church is like the human body, it only has ONE head and ONE body. The head directs the body in everything the body does therefore with Christ at the head of this ONE Body (church) it if impossible for a Vatican, pope, conference, governing board or any other "headquarters" on earth to govern this ONE church. Christ is their only head (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18). Christ gives life to the church. Christ directs and controls the church...NOT any man! Yet Christ depends on the church to do what Hew wants done. This church is the hands, feet, and mouth by which Christ works and speaks today.

HOW MANY SEE THE CHURCH TODAY

Nearly 2,000 years have passed since Jesus began His church. Many things have changed. Many who would profess the name of Jesus Christ are either unsatisfied with the church as they read of it in scripture or have never been taught what the Bible teaches the church of Christ is. Many who sincerely worship God do not know that they are not in the church build by Christ. They are simply in some man made rendition of the church.  To some, the church is a building this is why they look for beautiful buildings to worship in. Many have been misled to believe that the church is now made up of different groups or denominations, all is some type of one "invisible church".

Some have thought the church to be not important. They say, "We want Christ but not the church" (meaning the church that  is in their Bible).

The church of Christ as found in scripture preaches the same message that was preached in the beginning days of the church. People are told how to be saved today, as they were the first day the church began. When a person is saved s the Bible teaches, he becomes a member of the same church the first Christians were members of.

Christ is the head of this church, as He was when the church began. This church worships today as they did when the church began. HOW? They met on the first day of the week (Sunday). They shared the Lord's Supper. They sang to praise God and prayed together. They also shared their money for the work of the church and studied God's word together. (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 16:2; Ephesians 5:19;Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 13:15). There are no instruments of music, choirs, or "Jesus Rock Bands" to entertain the church. They understood that God was the center of worship; He was the audience that had to be pleased. Today men have created "churches" to entertain and hype the crowds

(Exodus 23:2; Proverbs 14:12;Mark 7:13).

The church, or church of Christ is still reaching millions of people with the gospel today.
